       Biography : Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar 

   Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a great teacher and social reformer. He was born on 26th September 1820 in a small village called Birsingha in West Bengal. His family was very poor. From a young age, he loved to study. At night, he read under street lamps because his house had no light.

He studied at Sanskrit College in Kolkata and became very wise. Because of his great knowledge, he was given the title ‘Vidyasagar’, which means “Ocean of Knowledge.”

Later, he became the principal of Sanskrit College. He made many changes in education. He opened schools for girls and made the Bengali alphabet simpler so children could learn easily.

Vidyasagar also worked to change society. He fought against child marriage and supported widow remarriage. Because of him, the Widow Remarriage Act was passed in 1856.

He was an honest, brave, and kind man. He helped many poor people. Vidyasagar died on 29th July 1891, but he is still remembered with love and respect today.
